27 Hours as a Family of Three and Counting...

Mike - "This is Mission Control in Houston. Reports from Expedition Daniel indicate that at T+ 27 hours, the mission is proceeding even better than expected." ;-)

(Remember, Daniel's birthmother liked the fact that I was goofy... just holding up my end of expectations.)

No, I'm not going to keep up the hours count for too long... it'll seem pretty stupid after a few months... "3912 hours of Daniel and counting..." And just wait till college - geez, we'll have to use scientific notation!!

Seriously, it already seems like way more than 27 hours - but not at all in a bad way - in the best way.

So... since coming home from Dulles, and Mom's lasagna (see great picture of Nana with Daniel - somehow all the pics of Grandpa with Daniel ended up on Grandpa's camera, and he hasn't quite mastered e-mailing them) Nana and Grandpa had fun with their first grandchild. Oh, and they brought him his 1st Ravens Bear!! After Nana and Grandpa went home, we were just the three of us.

Highlights of the evening included the 1st attempt at a bath. Daniel did not seem to like the fancy bath chair we got for him (it goes in the bathtub). So, taking a cue from Daniel's transitional care giver, Sharon, who said that he loved it when she put him in the bath w/ her, Holly ordered me to strip down and get in the bath with him. Which I did. (Don't worry - NO pics of THAT were taken) It did marginally soothe him... but when he did suddenly kick out his feet.... it got me, well, about where you expect it would. Let's just say I got cross-eyed for a moment. All in all, bath time did not go all that well - but we'll learn. He liked the towel afterwards.

Once he finally got asleep, he slept from 12:30 am to 6:30 am - not bad. Next week we'll brush up on our "Babywise" and get him started on a schedule.

Today was a lot of fun! We found out he REALLY likes his rain forest bouncer chair thing. He sat in it this morning and was just enthralled w/ Holly's hair dryer. Then we had our 1st visit to the pediatrician - who said that he is really healthy and is 90th percentile in both height and weight (well, duh...) and now weighs 10 lbs 9 1/2 oz and is 22 3/4 inches in length. Then we went to Babies R Us (In 5 years - "Daddy, where do Babies come from? Babies R Us?" "Yup."). At Babies R Us, Mommy changed him. Then, since he was doing so well and we wanted to buy in bulk, we went to Costco. By this time, Daddy needed some lunch, so I got a slice of Pepperoni pizza there for lunch - and I see why my former boss Hank and family get pizza there - it was good. Then we bought some bulk items, Daniel got fed (one great thing about bottle feeding - you can actually do it in the middle of Costco), and we went home. In the car, for the 1st time since we got him... Daniel finally pooped! We knew this, because while on Route 50, Holly sniffed the air in the car and said, "Does it stink in here?" I said, "Probably just that truck in front of us. (Survey says... Buzzzzzz Wrong answer!). That diaper made up for the two whole days without, trust me. Mommy changed him, as Daddy was unloading the car (all the bulk items, remember?), and it took TEN wipes!!!. Daniel, exhausted from his prodigious effort, then slept in his rain forest bouncy chair for 2 1/2 hours! So Mommy and Daddy were able to get things done. Daddy assembled a few more items.

There is an old Jewish tradition that one does not assemble the crib until the baby is born and healthy. Well, as Dudley (Pop-Pop) and I assembled the crib in Dec. of '05, that was blown. But One thing that I did wait for, strange as it may sound, is to perform the final act of assembly on the Dresser/changing table (also placed in the nursery in Dec of '05). When shipped, all the knobs of the drawers are on the inside of the drawers - so as to prevent damage during shipment. I resolved that I was not going to put the knobs on the outside of the drawers until we had a baby home with us. (OK, I didn't know that because of that, Holly has broken a few fingernails trying to open the knobless drawers over the past few weeks). So, I performed the ceremonial placing of the knobs today!!!

When Daniel woke up from his 2 1/2 hour nap, Daddy fed him for the 1st time. I've already been Chief Swaddler and burping him like a pro, and I've changed several of his wet diapers, but feeding him the 1st time was incredibly special.

This evening, Bennett & Jen & Robyn and BJ came over, bearing chicken chili and cornbread. Robyn loved getting her first look at Baby Daniel, and BJ smiled at him.... of course, BJ smiles at everyone, but we know that in a few years the two of them will be getting into mischief together. Jen was very happy to hold Daniel. Robyn, dressed in her tiara, is as wonderful as ever, and had a lot of fun helping Michael & Bennett locate the clothes dryer exhaust - the answer, bizzarely, is UNDER the deck.

One of the things I love is when its just the two of us, and I'm holding him... as opposed to him holding me, I guess - he may be big, but he's not THAT big yet. It's been a wonderful day :-) And while Daddy's been writing the blog, Mommy has been giving Daniel his first Tummy Time. He did great. Mommy thinks that Daniel is going to keep her up all night. We'll see...
